Introduced by Rolex in 1954 with the model number 6451, the Rolex Milgauss was designed as an anti-magnetic watch specifically for those who worked in areas where electromagnetic fields can wreck havoc on the timing of a watch, like power plants and research labs.
The original Milgauss was very similar to the appearance of the Rolex Submariner, with an over-sized case and bezel, with the Twinlock crown, and a riveted Oyster bracelet. Although the Milgauss only went through two more versions, it was the slowest mover in the Rolex line-up was discontinued in 1988.
At Basel 2007, Rolex announced the return of the Milgauss in three different versions all featuring the historic lightning bolt shaped second hand which represents the electromagnetic environment this watch was designed to work in. The new Rolex Milgauss comes in a 40mm case, with a COSC certified 3131 automatic winding movement. It is water resistant up to 100 meters.
