When we value your items at Hilltop, there’s so much that goes into it. We want to be able to offer you the best dollar for your loans. That’s why our appraisal process is in place to properly value every piece of item that comes our way.
Our professionally trained staff will authenticate and appraise your precious metals and diamonds with careful detail. After asking your permission, we will conduct a visual inspection using a jeweler’s loupe, weighing the item, sizing (carat weight) analysis and examining the color, cut and clarity of the stone.
The diamond carat analysis determines the size of the stone, and this is important in determining the value. The diamond color is graded by comparing it to master stones under artificial light that replicates northern daylight. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) uses color grades to determine the diamond’s color. The most common cut of a diamond is the round brilliant cut, (circle diamond), but there are plenty of other cuts that are popular such as the princess cut or the emerald cut.
The clarity of a diamond refers to the amount blemishes and inclusions a stone has that may deduct from its value. We determine the karat of gold by conducting a special acid test. The most important factor about these tests are that your jewelry will not be damaged in any way during the process. Our skilled appraisers can have your items appraised and cash in your hand in minutes.
When receiving a loan for items other than jewelry, such as, TV’s, computers, stereos, DVD players, gaming systems, cameras, power tools, firearms, etc., we will test them to determine the working condition of the item. This includes visual inspections, powering on the electronic device, quick operations to measure the functionality, and making sure any necessary parts that were included are present.
The value on all merchandise is based on pre-owned retail values, and not what the item was worth when it was brand new. We anticipate the resale of the item and your loan value will reflect that. Our staff will compare your items with the current pre-owned market your item belong to. We will ensure you that you will get the best value for your item after an overall condition assessment for your item is conducted.
Every appraisal for jewelry and general items are made to reflect the current market for those items and are made on a case by case basis. This is true for any collateral.
